Academic Support
Beyond teaching dance, we support the need for students to excel in multiple areas as they enter adulthood. New Ballet knows that when young people advance as dancers, they are also able to advance academically. We also recognize that students commit much of their time to dance as they advance in the program. We provide resources for students, including opportunities for leadership and community service, tutoring, mentoring and college preparation, placing dancers on a path to succeed both in dance and life.
In 2017, the Martin Family Education Resource Center, located within New Ballet, was opened to address a lack of access to broadband and technology in Memphis. Equipped with computers and high-speed internet as well as MSCS approved software, flexible desk space and comfortable study areas, the center welcomes students to work on school assignments and study in between dance classes.
We’re proud to celebrate New Ballet alumni’s successes!
Since 2008, 100% of New Ballet students have entered college
Tutoring
All students ages 8 and up have access to tutoring services. In partnership with Rhodes College, New Ballet connects student dancers with university-level tutors through the college’s CityLynx program. This work-study program is designed and powered by The Bonner Program, which promotes equal access to education and opportunities for youth in the community.
Tutoring participants will match with Rhodes College students for specific courses and topics where there are opportunities for improvement, at zero cost to New Ballet families. Preparation for ACT and SAT college entrance level exams is also available. Out of best interest and safety for our students, New Ballet vets and screens all tutors.
College and Career Support
A core value of New Ballet is to set students up for success beyond high school graduation. Instructors and a team of advisors provide college preparation and counseling, including guidance on university-level and post-secondary dance programs. This team advises teens and parents to explore what program or educational path is the right fit for each of them.
If interested in pursuing a career in dance, students have access to New Ballet’s robust roster of Teaching and Guest Artists. These mentors share their experiences in the world of professional dance and encourage students to explore opportunities that align with their personal interests and goals.
This support service is available to all New Ballet students, as well as families, as we encourage parents’ and guardians’ involvement along this journey. Group mentoring and counseling sessions are held throughout the year, offering opportunities for families to meet one-on-one with staff and mentors.
