Becoming Clara!

By Sunyah Fisher

Hello everyone! My name is Sunyah Fisher, and I’m proud to have graduated from Middle College High School this year.

I’ve been dancing since I was two years old and found my home at New Ballet Ensemble when I was six. I started as a beginner in hip hop and joined the ballet Level 2 class. New Ballet has done so much to nurture my talent over the last eleven years.

In my first NutRemix, I was featured as a little toy soldier. That year’s Clara was the beautiful Brianna Brown, and my first Clara to perform with. Brianna assisted in teaching my ballet level 2 class, so being able to share the stage with her meant a great deal to me. It laid the foundation for the path I was aiming for: to be a beautiful Clara in NutRemix one day.

As the years passed at New Ballet, I discovered West African dance and developed a passion for it. As I progressed through my training, more opportunities opened up for me.

For instance, this past summer, with the help of a Master Guest Artist I met through New Ballet, I received a full tuition scholarship for the Washington School of Ballet’s 5-week summer intensive in Washington, D.C., along with an extra week for repertory experience.

When I returned to New Ballet in the fall, my dream of being cast as Clara became a reality. It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but it was all worth it.

Once the NutRemix season was over, it became college application season. Do I plan on pursuing dance in the future? Yes, I do! Over these past several months, New Ballet has been incredibly helpful as I navigated the audition process. From private lessons with instructors, even Katie, to the studio space to film my online auditions. I couldn’t be more thankful for all the faith and support I have in my corner!

Because I grew up through this program, receiving professional training and mentoring, I’ve been offered over $257,000 in college scholarships over four years to achieve my dream of becoming a professional dancer.

This fall, I will attend Howard University, majoring in dance at the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

Thank you, New Ballet.
