Summer Cypher
July 10 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
An Evening of Movement, Culture, and Community
New Ballet is opening its studio doors for a free Summer Cypher, a night built around jookin, one of Memphis’s most electric homegrown dance forms. The event is hosted and DJ’d by Memphis native Marico “Dr. Rico” Flake, a jookin choreographer and movement creator widely regarded as one of the most influential dancers and teachers in urban dance. The night kicks off with a jookin class, then opens into a true cypher: a freestyle, open session where dancers take turns in the circle, feed off each other’s energy, and push each other to go further.
This isn’t a recital. It’s not a competition. It’s a space to learn, experiment, fail, laugh, and grow — surrounded by people who love to move as much as you do.
Why Jookin?
Jookin grew up right here in Memphis, born out of street parties, block dances, and pure self-expression. It’s fast, it’s technical, it’s soulful — and it belongs to this city. The Summer Cypher is a chance to celebrate that legacy while building the next generation of dancers who’ll carry it forward.
Who Should Come
Dancers ages 14 and up — beginners, seasoned movers, students from other styles looking to cross-train, or anyone who’s been curious about jookin and wants an entry point with real guidance. No experience necessary. Just bring your energy and your willingness to move.
